Not just another Monday.

I apologize for not getting a FREEBIE up early this morning. We've had a few distractions:

#1 Liam started showing signs of a cold/sinus over the weekend. It became pretty full blown this morning with a bloody nose and possible ear drainage. Ugh.

#2 Last night while watching a movie (by the way, PLEASE go rent "Secondhand Lion"...it came on TV last night and it is a great flick), I was rubbing our dog, Annie, and suddenly felt this knot on her side. As with any mass or lump, it scares you to death! Every frightening thought went through my head, but we are just going to get her to the vet this week and pray that it's nothing serious.

Okay, so that's our Monday.

Just as a side note, I was wondering what your thoughts are on how many more people/objects/animals can fit into the bathroom when Mommy has to use it. This morning it was me (the only one who needed to be in there), Liam with 12 of his LARGEST, LOUDEST toys, Annie, and 45 children's books. At one point, my feet were propped up on Annie's back while she was sprawled out across the bathroom floor. You know, as long as she is comfortable...

What I wouldn't give for my free McCafe Mocha from Mickey D's. Go get yours - just get it by 7 p.m.!

A Weekend for Kids - Free Events on Saturday

I am always in search of free entertainment on the weekends. Liam is very hands-on and doesn't really do well with the zoo or anything where he walks from one thing to the next in observation. He needs to be able to touch it, paint it, remove parts, make it fly, line it up like a train, or whatever else floats his boat. None of this "stand back and watch" business. (Much of that is a huge lack of patience, as well!) So, in an effort to find some free things to do, I was SO excited to see these events taking place at local businesses.

Okay, July is Kids Month at Borders Bookstore! To mark the 40th anniversary of landing on the moon, participating Borders and Waldenbooks are hosting a FREE Kid's Summer Space Camp Event on Saturday, July 25, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. Please call your local Borders to confirm that they are indeed hosting it and the time.

Kids will enjoy the following:
  • Storytime
  • Games
  • Moonwalk Trivia
  • Crafts
  • Face painting
Another FREE event this Saturday is the Build and Grow Workshop at Lowe's. (I really want to take Liam to this one!) This Saturday, from 10-11 a.m., they can build a helicopter with completely movable parts. This is a GREAT way for Mom or Dad to spend some quality craft time with their little one.

*You do need to register your child for this one. Just click on the link above - it's very simple.

As always, I would LOVE for you to let me know if and when you take advantage of the deals I list each day!

Have a super weekend!

It is Mars' "Real Chocolate Relief Act," and I could not be more relieved. Snickers, Twix, Milky Way, 3 Musketeers...I don't even know how I'll choose (except that Twix sounds really yummy right now).

You can go here starting at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow and request your coupon for a FREE chocolate bar. It's just that easy!

They are giving these to the first 250,000 customers, so don't be late!!! This is every Friday until September.

Gotta get your chocolate on!!!

Motherhood and Mother Theresa

"If you judge people, you have no time to love them." ~Mother Theresa

Almost every Sunday, this quote is printed in our church bulletin. And every time I read it, it hits me just as strongly as it did the week before. Mother Theresa was most definitely a saint in countless ways, and the message she sends us with her words is one I definitely need to be reminded of - and often.

I know that before I became a parent, I most certainly thought to myself, in observation of other parents interacting with their children, "I will never do that." I might have even thought, "Wow, they don't have that child under control!" At times, I probably even made a comment under my breath, or to another person, after the fact. And then, I can remember one time, after saying that I would never do this or that with my child, an older adult said to me, very kindly, "You never know WHAT you will do when you have children, so just remember that." And I remembered it and it rings true today!

Some might say it's karma. I don't really know what to call it. Here's what I think of karma: It's really just a way of saying that you need to CHANGE something about yourself, whether it's the way you treat someone, what you think of someone, or, in a case like this, how you are judging someone. Something happens that sort of slaps you in the face, and the reason it slaps you in the face is because you were once guilty of it yourself and now someone is doing the same thing to you! It's never fun when it happens, but it is almost always necessary.

Although I never expected this to be a huge lesson during my journey of becoming Catholic, one of the topics that came up in almost every meeting was that we are not supposed to judge others. Period. It's not our place. None of us were put on this Earth with the role of judging someone's character, yet I see many of us really struggling with that daily, and for some people, it almost defines who they are. For example, they might see it as their role in a family to decide what another family member is or isn't when, in fact, may know very little about them.

With regard to motherhood, what I can say is that I definitely learned the lesson Mother Theresa tried to teach us. As an imperfect mother, I know there are "perfect" moms out there judging everything I do or don't do. Anything from our choice to use time out instead of corporal punishment (how dare we choose to use the non-violent approach that I quickly learned is almost unheard of in the South...you can imagine the looks we get), to how or where our child plays, to what he wears (or in some cases, what he doesn't wear), to how serious we take our responsibility to keeping our child healthy and safe from things that are unhealthy and unsafe, to how we should potty train (my favorite was a statement that implied that when parents get sick of buying diapers, they'll get their kids potty trained. Right...because of course my 3 year old is going to understand the concept of, control your bladder, Mommy doesn't want to buy diapers).

We, as parents, have grown accustomed to EXPLAINING why we do what we do, perhaps to prevent the judgment that almost always follows. However, I have actually reached the point where I do NOT explain, unless someone specifically asks me WHY. The reason? Almost 100% of the time, if they have taken the time to ASK me for more information, it is because they truly want to know and be educated - not because they are judging me. The ones coming at us with judgment usually just rattle off some sarcastic comment (and I love when it's the ones who aren't parents, because you know, they clearly have the most experience...as I did when it was me!).

Just a quick note about that. If you aren't yet a parent, your vote pretty much doesn't count in the eyes of this parent. You can go on and on and on about how or why you know this or that, but until you give birth, you don't. If you have not held my child since the first day, experienced what I have experienced with him, then you don't know what got us to where we are today. Unless you are offering up suggestions or tips (which are ALWAYS welcome, bring them on), just kindly zip it. Also, unless you are a grandparent, close family member, babysitter or have been given permission from the parents (like we have given to Liam's very special Mary Poppins aunt), you have absolutely NO rights in terms of scolding someone's child simply because you don't like what they are doing, or because you don't like the way we are handling it. I am in the room - I've got it. And if I don't, it's still not your problem.

Karma. Trust me, you'll get yours just like I got mine.

As a mom, I now automatically feel the urge to help other parents when I can see they might be frustrated or at the end of their rope. It's not easy raising toddlers, but I am blessed to have a beautiful, loving little boy. And just a reminder: he is a BOY, he is a LALLY, and, again,he is a BOY.

Recently we were relaxing with good friends who are not yet parents. Liam decided to not cooperate for the moment and I was about to put him in time out. My friend asked me, "Now you don't believe in spanking, right?" I responded by telling her that we don't use physical punishment as a discipline, we use time out...and it works. She applauded me for getting through the toddler stage without having to spank, which is always funny to me when someone says it. I got absolutely NO sense of being judged by her but simply the discussion and acknowledgment that we have chosen one method instead of another. It seemed like a wonderful opportunity to talk openly about it without judging each other for our choices as parents.

As Mother Theresa implied from her statement, when we aren't judging each other, we can love.

Wednesday, July 22 - Arby's Wednesday Freebies!

All summer long, Arby's is having Wednesday FREEbies, with a different deal each week.

Tomorrow is a FREE Roastburger with the purchase of a soft drink. GREAT idea for lunch!!!

Offer is limited to one per person while supplies last.

Mornings in FLO-villa.

It's not just anywhere in the country that you can count on seeing this when you look out your window in the morning. It occurs most days of the week here in Flovilla, Georgia.

Know this. I LOVE deer. (Ask Christie and Peter.) They are so beautiful! And yes, I could sit and watch them all day long.

What I don't love is what I know they have done to my vegetable garden! I am pretty sure this lovely lady and her friends cracked open each of my developing watermelons, just to see if they were good. Too bad I never got to find out for myself! And some of them also enjoyed my zucchini, squash, and cucumbers that I never got to eat. Whatever. Now I'm so aggravated with the garden situation that I find myself rarely even watering it and just watching to see if I end up with any more tomatoes.

Notice her making her way into the yard, closer to the garden.

Here is Annie's opinion on the matter. She was NOT impressed.

Notice in the photo below the overly ripe Roma tomato (and dried up leaves) hanging there just waiting for this deer to sample. (Yes, I know...a styrofoam cooler. Red.neck. I was desperate for a garden and not one person *cough, cough* volunteered to dig me up a spot.) Anyway, you know she will eat it. She's just pretending to ignore it because she can see me through the window.

Go on, girl, take it. You might as well finish off your summer with a bang.

I am NOT bitter.

Free Pastry Day w/ Drink Purchase at Starbucks - Tomorrow!!!

See, I told y'all I would find something good!

Lucky for you, tomorrow, July 21, is Free Pastry Day (with a drink purchase) at Starbucks. Just print this coupon and you are good to go!

This deal will take place from opening until 10:30 a.m. It is my prediction that Starbucks is going to run out of the delicious pastries, so get there early!!!

Mochalicious.

My goal is to share a daily freebie (I'll do my best to find them!).

I was VERY excited to hear last night's McDonald's commercial about the Monday offer of a free sample-sized hot or iced mocha. It is offered from 7 am - 7 pm through August 3rd. Just for asking, you'll get either an 8 oz. hot, or 7 oz. iced mocha. It is rich, chocolately, and topped with whipped cream...then drizzled with chocolate. Hello? Does your morning GET any better?

I'd like to add that, for the not-so-typical coffee-type drinking person, this size was perfect!

In all seriousness.

These pictures will tell you just how far we've come with getting Liam potty trained.

He is way more excited to show us how he has mastered "emotions" - not so much into the whole,

"I need to go potty like a big boy," or

"I need to use the big potty so that I can go to 3-K in 2 weeks," or

"I need to use the potty so that Mommy and Daddy don't have to keep wiping my bottom," or

"I need to learn to use the potty so that I can, you know, be a BIG BOY."

"I am perfectly innocent (and cute)" face.

"Yes, I will be a heart breaker" face.

"But not with this fake grin" face.

"This is making me VERRRY sleepy" face.

"Potty training is scary" face.

"But it sure makes things silly" face.

"I hope to someday be 'The Thinker' " face.

"The sound of pee-pee surprised me!" face.

"I will sit here for 4 more minutes" face.

"I can do this with just one eye" face.

"Now I can do this with the other eye" face.

"This is EXHAUSTING!" face.

"I am, in every way, the class clown" face.

"I am SO not using the potty tonight" face.

Thank you for joining us for another episode of "Liam DOESN'T Go to the Potty."

The Superman Shirt

Liam has officially set the record. He has worn it 3 days in a row. I do believe he is certifiably obsessed with the Superman shirt. (Yes, I do wash it, but it's a tricky process that requires Supermom powers. And sometimes it doesn't get washed. I know, ick. Whatever. That's not the dirtiest thing to happen in this house since he was born.)

Gagi bought this pajama set for him a year ago. We all thought it was SO cute. It has the adorable little pretend belt at the bottom of the shirt, so it looks like just the Superman costume. It is a size 3T, which would normally be baggy because he is, well, pretty small for his age. This shirt is now, and has been for months, what I would consider a "high water" shirt because it has been washed and dried SO MANY TIMES.

What's worse? He wants to wear it E-V-E-R-Y-W-H-E-R-E.

When he gets out of the bathtub, it's always, "Mommy, I want my SUPERMAN shirt." Huge emphasis on "Superman."

When we get home from a long day and he starts stripping down, it's again, "Mommy, I need my SUPERMAN shirt." I want to ask him, "What about the Superman pants?" but honestly, I would imagine that none of us even know where they are at this point, as they have been seriously neglected.

He wore it last week for 2 days of Vacation Bible School, where one mother went so far as to (rather snobbishly) comment that he always has that shirt on when she sees him. (Okay, little miss My-boys-are-perfectly-and-appropriately-dressed-for-every-occasion-and-I-am-in-a-position-to-judge-your-inability-to-get-your-child-to-wear-a-different-shirt. Sorry, lady. They aren't handing out that award here.) Keep in mind that each day that week, the children were supposed to dress as different animals. Yeah, didn't happen once. He was too worried about the shirt.

He wore it at least once a week to preschool this past year, and might I add, usually on the WRONG day. You know, like "Dress like a cowboy" day, or "Wear All Green" day. Never on pajama day, because after all, it IS a pajama shirt.

He wore it today to Noah's Ark, where we spent the day petting the deer and pigs, not where we are supposed to go and pretend we are superheroes, jumping off of buildings with pretend capes. Even there a lady commented on his shirt, to which I explained that he insists on wearing it everywhere. She giggled sympathetically.

I am just a little sad thinking of all the adorable clothes he has in his dresser that he hasn't even touched because of this obsession. But you know, this is just one of the amazing things about motherhood. You just do what you do. And you write it down in their baby book and look forward to the day you get to share with him this incredible story about a "high water" Superman shirt that rarely saw the washer. (Shut up. I know it's dirty!)

I was having a phone conversation with my mom one day last week and, very nonchalantly, she mentions that she was shopping. I think I must have blacked out because all I heard was "...got Liam...new...Superman...has a cape!"

Seriously? A cape? Is she KIDDING?!!!
