The Superman Shirt

Liam has officially set the record. He has worn it 3 days in a row. I do believe he is certifiably obsessed with the Superman shirt. (Yes, I do wash it, but it's a tricky process that requires Supermom powers. And sometimes it doesn't get washed. I know, ick. Whatever. That's not the dirtiest thing to happen in this house since he was born.)

Gagi bought this pajama set for him a year ago. We all thought it was SO cute. It has the adorable little pretend belt at the bottom of the shirt, so it looks like just the Superman costume. It is a size 3T, which would normally be baggy because he is, well, pretty small for his age. This shirt is now, and has been for months, what I would consider a "high water" shirt because it has been washed and dried SO MANY TIMES.

What's worse? He wants to wear it E-V-E-R-Y-W-H-E-R-E.

When he gets out of the bathtub, it's always, "Mommy, I want my SUPERMAN shirt." Huge emphasis on "Superman."

When we get home from a long day and he starts stripping down, it's again, "Mommy, I need my SUPERMAN shirt." I want to ask him, "What about the Superman pants?" but honestly, I would imagine that none of us even know where they are at this point, as they have been seriously neglected.

He wore it last week for 2 days of Vacation Bible School, where one mother went so far as to (rather snobbishly) comment that he always has that shirt on when she sees him. (Okay, little miss My-boys-are-perfectly-and-appropriately-dressed-for-every-occasion-and-I-am-in-a-position-to-judge-your-inability-to-get-your-child-to-wear-a-different-shirt. Sorry, lady. They aren't handing out that award here.) Keep in mind that each day that week, the children were supposed to dress as different animals. Yeah, didn't happen once. He was too worried about the shirt.

He wore it at least once a week to preschool this past year, and might I add, usually on the WRONG day. You know, like "Dress like a cowboy" day, or "Wear All Green" day. Never on pajama day, because after all, it IS a pajama shirt.

He wore it today to Noah's Ark, where we spent the day petting the deer and pigs, not where we are supposed to go and pretend we are superheroes, jumping off of buildings with pretend capes. Even there a lady commented on his shirt, to which I explained that he insists on wearing it everywhere. She giggled sympathetically.

I am just a little sad thinking of all the adorable clothes he has in his dresser that he hasn't even touched because of this obsession. But you know, this is just one of the amazing things about motherhood. You just do what you do. And you write it down in their baby book and look forward to the day you get to share with him this incredible story about a "high water" Superman shirt that rarely saw the washer. (Shut up. I know it's dirty!)

I was having a phone conversation with my mom one day last week and, very nonchalantly, she mentions that she was shopping. I think I must have blacked out because all I heard was "...got Liam...new...Superman...has a cape!"

Seriously? A cape? Is she KIDDING?!!!

  1. Mila had her "pretty clothes" (which were tacky and involved a skort and lots of sequins) that I had to wash and then air dry on a (semi)daily basis because otherwise she probably had DFACS programmed into her Little Tykes phone.

Summer has these Hello Kitty shoes that were cute for, like, 11 seconds, until she scuffed them up and got them dirty. Now she looks homeless but refuses to wear any other shoes. Oh! AND? She wants to dress herself all the time. So basically I have to walk around with a little gypsy with dirty Hello Kitty Shoes.

There goes my hope for Mom of the Year, down the drain!
